Sam's is a good place to buy products. Don't skimp on quality. Avoid Arm & Hammer at all costs. Liquid will work better overall than powder. I have found Downy to be the best softener made. Costs a little more, but worth it.

Just a quick comment on powder verses detergent from mwheels601. Detergent WILL always work better as the detergent is in liquid form and starts working as soon as it hits the water. Powder unfortunately has to dissolve and this can take some time in cold and warm water. As mwheels601 says do not compromise on quality. It costs a little more but you use a LOT less as a rule.
I often see comments about Downy and other products. I use commercial grade powders and detergents.I cannot give you a current figure but when I did comparisons several years age I found that I was saving between 12- 15% on chemicals. It is probably relative today. It may not be economical if you are only buying small amounts or you have to pay for delivery. It is worth investigating.
