I am presently reviewing comparable store information in an area where I plan to build a new store.

Water usage records for a comparable unit (similar planned size, similar demographics, within 5 miles of the newly planned store) indicate a substantial drop in water usage from 425,000 gallons in May/02 to 287,000 in June/02 (a difference of 138,000 gallons). This store has been operation since November/00. It's previous lowest level of water usage was 358,000 in December/01. It's average water usage since inception is 469,884 gallons/month. Water consumption has NEVER gone below 358,000 gallons before June/02.

Would like to know from my fellow members what could cause/explain such a drop in water usage.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

Are you sure that you looking at 2 billing periods with ACTUAL meter readings?

If one of these bills is an estimate, then that would certainly explain the difference.

Did the mat install any new machines, replacing much older machines that are water hogs?

Did a new mat open recently in that area that may have taken a chunk of their business?

Hope this helps.

All good points made above. One other item, if it was for a billing period (not the same number of days) did the low one include one less weekend. Did it have a holiday in it. All things to consider. Or, was it just a wrong meter reading, these things do happen.

Thanks for the replies.......:)

No new laundries in the area. All machines in this laundry are new (business opened in November 2000); no equipment replacements. The figures cited are ACTUAL meter readings, not estimates. Could be a bad reading....For such a drop (if a new meter reader), wouldn't the utility send someone out for a second reading?

Low months of June '02 and December '01 are not comparable (?) in the followin sense - Expected December '01 figures to be lower, as it is a holiday month. Nothing special happened in June, other than school ending (this year school was out at May 31st in our area; most schools require uniforms). In comparing two previous June months for water usage, nothing even close to the 287,000 now experienced.
I'm tracking the laundry's water usage for July, '02 to determine if this is some kind of an anomaly.......

Baffled by the drop in usage.........
Any ideas?

So you are basicaly spying on another mat water meter. Why not call the owner and tell them you plan on screwing them and want to know what the deal is with thier water meter? Get it? Which piece of the pie do you think will be yours?

Can anyone get the actual water usage of any laundromat from the water dept. ? Is this public information ? I would appreciate a reply. Thanks!

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but in Central NJ it is public information.

We can get the detailed water bill from any water customer by calling the appropriate water authority and giving them the address and business name.

I always experience a pretty sharp business drop in June and July. Kids are out of school, people are not wearing nearly as much clothing, hot days are nicer for hanging clothes out, blanket and comforters are in the closet and not being used and people go out of town for vacation and spend all their money on other things. It is just a slower period for laundries in the south at least. Of course the way to verify this trend is to look for similar drops in gas usage. December is never as bad to us as the hot summer months.
