I've tried ads in the local university paper, flyers (both door hangers and passed out on campus), and direct mail postcards. Flyers have been the most effective, by far. The postcards were second. The really nice thing about the postcards was that they were in the form of a coupon that they redeemed for a new wash in my new washers. Since the card had their address I was able to plot them on a map. I was surprised how many drove past a couple other mats to come to mine.

We have a small ad in both local phone books, currently are running an ad in a local suburb newspaper and have done a small amount of postcard mailings. We are unattended, so it is very hard to say what is or is not working. I do get occassional calls from the phonebook ads. Who knows?

Ive tried newspapers and dropping flyers with very little success. I hadnt thought of including a free wash option with the flyers so maybe ill try that.
My biggest success is a billboard out the front of the shop with a blackboard on one side. We are fully attended so I put it out while im there and bring it in at night. The blackboard gives me the chance to advertise weekly/monthly specials and remind passers-by what the laundrette offers. Luckily im in an area with lots of pedestrian traffic.
Every time i put a special up for blankets/comforters i get a surge of this business over the next few weeks. People forget about getting them done till they walk past a few time and get visibly reminded.

One promotion I had success with when I was in the business was a coupon in the local paper offering "free detergent for every washer you use every tues, weds, & thurs". Those were the slow days of the week and I was using the promotion to shift some business away from the busy days to the slower days. We gave the free detergent to everyone whether they brought in the coupon or not. I bought professional grade granular detergent in 50 lb bags direct from Proctor & Gamble.

Dryman,
Who do I contact at P&G to get those bags? I use the lg Tide Powder boxes for my WDF business and I would love to get a larger size.

JamesD,
Tell your distributer you want Orvus in the 50 lb bag. Orvus is the commercial name for Tide.

Powdered Orvus used to be superior to the powdered Tide because it included phosphates. I don't know if it still does.
