Raising frontloaders helps loading and unloading clothes, but hurts customers access to the soap dishes on larger machines. I installed my Wasco Gen 6s directly to a floor that was 6" of concrete. They are a much taller machine, it isn't as easy to load clothing but at least most people can hit the soap dishes. I've had no complaints about the loading of clothes.

I have all my frontloads on bases so the loading is high enough to clear a laundry cart. The only fronts I have mounted directly to the floor are the 50# Wasco Giants. Like Rondo said it is not necessary to use bases, but it makes the equipment more convenient to use, and makes for a nice installation. It also helps as far as traffic flow as customers don't have to circle the carts around the doors. Personally I would find out the difference in the height to the bottom of the door, and the height of your laundry baskets, and get a base that will cover that difference. The only machines that short people may have a problem with are when you get into the 35# - 40# machines, but it's no big deal when you weigh out the advantages vs disadvantages.
