Has or does anyone sell their top load washer space for rent to advertising other businesses? I have seen this is becoming more & more popular, I'm thinking about doing it for the extra $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Just wondering if there have been any others? Or negatives with this type of advertising?

Chad, I wouldn't do it if I was you It looks to tacky. Keep your mat looking professional the way it is.

I was part of Laundromedia's test group in Southern California. Did a CBS promotion on my tops for their fall line-up. Each ad spanned 4 tops and was actually done quite well. The ads were put on professionally and stand the test of time. I asked my customers what they thought and 9 out of 10 thought it was a great idea & happy to see that I was exploring new revenue sources. My only problem is that I'm phasing out the tops with frontloaders. The big thing to watch out for is negotiating the contract. It's your laundromat, don't let them have all the control on advertising in your mat. Keep the term short with renewals at your option. Designate the specific areas they are allowed to "wrap" or "sticker". Tops are easy, but beware they don't fully sticker your entire dryer windows or frontload windows, etc. The extra $$$ is great!

ECOWASH, could you send me photo's & what was your price structure for the front of the machine compared to the top lid or inside lid? I figure I have three advertising spots per machine.

I also looked into laundromedia and was sent a contract. I chose not to sign. I did not like all the fine print in their contract. Also, I believe I was only permitted to turn one ad away per year. I was afraid that they might advertise a suggestive product or distasteful movie or tv show. Eaxample would be having the movie Jackass plastered all over your machines or Trojan Condoms or possibly political ads. Maybe I will advertise my laundromat in yous. Something to think about ?

What can you earn in a month from the ads?

To All,

I wish one of my competitors would contract for that advertising program. Then I'd buy an ad on his washers.

BCW,

I think plastering ads all over our washers is one of the stupidest ideas I've heard in the past 40 years. It's penny wise and pound foolish. It's a "profit center" that degrades our entire store. Some things you just have to walk away from and this is one of them.

My wife saw an online bit on this, and we are bouncing the idea around some.

What we are considering, doing it ourselves, and placing the ads on the inside lid of the top loads. The full face fronts just seem a little extreme to us.

We have two ways (and may use both) to accomplish this. Mutual advertising, ie placing one of our ads at their site in exchange for theirs at ours (a car wash location that is ideal for a sign of our location for example) aka barter. The other would be targeted revenue ads, like tourist sites like water slides and restaurants.

We often are asked for directions to places like the car wash, restaurants, and things to do while visiting. This does give us the list of "targets" to approach.

In the barter case, we would probably look to make up the agreement that the placements of teh mutual ads would not be charged for, and that we each would pay for the printing of our own media at the other location.

As far as the revenue ads, we still need to play with numbers.

vernonmaytag,

Since toploaders normally have their operating instructions on the underside of the lids, is it a good idea to just cover that up with an ad? There may be a liability issue here.

Personally, I don't like the idea of advertising other businesses in my store. I like to keep my store as pristine as possible. I think the benefit of any "barter" advertising would be more than offset by the despoiled look of your toploaders.

We've started the ball rolling some.

As far as the instuructions, etc, we plan on printing off a copy of those to have in place cards behind the washers. In the past, we've found that we get all the "temp setting" type questions from people after they have loaded the machines, closed the lid and put coins it. The cards would be there visible when they do that.

The local sign shop gave us a pretty good rate on the car wrap printing, including a laminate coat to protect the printing. It costs us less than $10 per lid print (if we provide them the artwork).

Our main audience for customers right now will be the tourist destinations. The one's we keep getting asked directions to, (Car Washes, theme parks, restaurants). We will probably not approach Motel/Hotels, as most tourists in doing laundry are already staying at a place.

My wife's objective here is really to use the profit's generated to cover our OWN ad budget.

We've already gotten 4 positive sales. We will be printing the graphics up in a week or so.
