I need one more part time worker for my store.
Is it OK to hire 17 years old High School student?
I think too young, but how about your experience or opinion regarding "AGE"....
Thanks

High school students can be great help,IF YOU ARE THERE!!!!
Most of them can not work by themselves and your store will have a lot their friends visit .....
I hire my son ad his fiend put arcade games together, they can work 2,3 hours with me then their friends start calling or they get tired of doing the work.....if I hire them to test(play) games, they will work a little longer.
Retired people, house wife are better employees.

You will have to train and supervise. But you probably do that anyway.

Does one answer apply to all students? High school students, like all humans, are individuals. What is true of one student is not necessarily true of another. When I bought my store about three years ago, the previous owner had run it unattended. I hired two students, part time, as my first attendants. I had to start somewhere, and wanted to offer WDF on a shoestring to get the service established. Probably a bad move...but:
One of them was very productive, worked his entire shift, and did not encourage visits in the store by his friends... an excellent worker, but he quit in early September when he figured out how much time he'd need to spend on his schoolwork, senior year.
The other did the minimum of what was asked, spent lots of 'on the clock' time socializing in the store, played video games on the office computer, locked himself out of the office and then broke the door-jamb to get back inside. He quit with two days' notice. Perhaps someday he'll make someone a good employee, but I think he'll need full-time supervision for his next job.
I now employ several middle-aged hispanic women with prior experience in laundromats. What an improvement! These people are reliable, productive, my customers love them, and they are all close friends, and work out their own schedules to keep the store covered without bothering me over day-to-day shift-swaps and such. I pay them more than I paid the students, but I think I get what I pay for.
Try a older person. they are good workers and always on time.
