stagnant water smell front loader

anyone advise what is cause/repair stagnant water smell in
front loader...have 16...only one has just become nasty!
new machine purchased 4 yrs ago....thanks in advance

A good cleaning (get out all the wet lint from everywhere) run a couple cycles with hot water and bleach. And then leave the door open to air dry and that should do the trick.

If not, maybe someone else can give you some of their expertise.

Make sure doors are left open when machine is not in use.

Sewer gas could be venting from your sewer line through your washer.
Check to make sure there is a water trap (i'm not sure of the correct term) behind the washer.

The only problem we encounter with front loader (and dryer) doors being open is people bump into them (ouch!)and children
are likely to climb inside during business hours. I guess if you are running unattended you don't hear the tree fall in the forest. Our closers run the machines
with a little bleach then leave the doors open after closing periodically. They also inspect inside the dryers for gum, tar and other
suprises. We also put little "inspect before using" signs on all dryers to re-inforce the customers look before they leap.

My rules are that all frontload washer doors are to be open when not in use, and all dryer doors closed when not in use. You have to leave the frontload washer doors un-latched to let the moisture dry.

We had something similar a few years ago. It was very subtle..came and went. Drove me crazy. It turned out to be the sewer gases. changed the drain and no more smell.
Occ I find a musty smell in a machine where somebody has washed some really mildewed clothes (can't see why they'd still want them). In that case I spray with lysol and leave door open a crack.

Look in the yellow pages for a water and waste supply house and ask for a "back flow valve" in the size pipe that your washers are plumbed in. This valve will allow water flow one way and stop sewer gas and water from coming in back wards. It will solve your oder problem! The supply house should specialize in underground pipe.
