How can the competition continue to offer
"free dry" indefinitely without being in the
"red"?

Most of the free dry places are run by local equiptment distributor. Check to see, and if this is the case never buy from that distributor.

Toploaders vary in price---from $1.00-$1.25.
When we open our new store in April, the few
toploaders that we have will be priced at
$1.25. The dryers in the greater Los Angeles
area are priced at 25cents per 15minutes. Any
suggestions how we can deal with that moronic
mindset and not commit financial suicide?

Visit your competitors. Find out what you can do better than they can. They can beat you on price but customers may still prefer what you offer at a higher price. For instance, if the dryers are so slow that it takes twice as long to dry then you can show your customers that they get a dry load for the same number of quarters and less time.
