I have some space available to put up a larger sign that will increase my visibility from the street. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the largest word should be "Laundry" or "Laundromat" on the sign? Of course, the "Laundry" can be a little larger on the sign, since it has fewer letters.

Personally I'm partial to the Laundromat phrase, but I'd bet half of this group prefers one, half another so I'd say go with what you think suits your neighborhood, and your own personal taste.

Michael,
"Laundry" indicates a place where commercial laundry is processed by a professional on-site staff. "Laundromat" indicates a self-serve faciltiy where one can process laundry using coin-operated machines. "Coin Laundry" also indicates a self-serve facility where one processes laundry using coin-operated machines.

Michael,
Coin Laundry is the standard name.
Laundromat(coming from some store owner who made up this name around 30~40years ago) was not standard, but most people use it, so now we can say it's more pupular...
But, originally, we should call "Coin Laundry".

laundror,
Actually, "Laundromat" is a word that was coined by Westinghouse Corp back in the early 1960s. It's their registered trademark but has since become part of our language just as "Jello" - a registered trademark is more commonly used than the vernacular "gelatin".

So, if I call my place a "washateria", how much market share will I grab from the neighboring laundromat? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

My favorite and I think the name the public most recognizes is Laundomat or Laundrymat. I think we as owners put too much thought into this. The truth is the public does'nt have a clue what the difference is between laundromat, laundrymat, laundry, coin laundry, etc.

yes, Jello, I agree...whatever name it doesn't matter...
people see inside store, not judge by "store signage" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Everyone - thank you for your thoughts. There does not seems to be a 'best-practice' in this area. I will probably go with "Laundry" just becasue I can use fewer and larger letters for more visibility.

Still think you should add the word coin to set yourself apart from the dry cleaners.

Michael, Like what Brett says I would stick with Coin Laundry. Here's what mine looks like.

LOL, you have more cars in your lot than that 3.5MM super laundry. Maybe you should sell your mat for like $5MM ;-)

Alex,
$5m would be too cheap considering that nice LED sign and all ... try $7m. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I also like the Laundromat better for the reason that laundry seems like what a dry cleaner does. Or Coin OP Laundry like the older stores
