I am looking into purchasing a laundromat, is there a software program to use to help keep track with purchases, inventories, etc. instead of the usual cash register? What do the other owners use? What are some things that are of most importance in owning a laundromat?

Eddy,

Not having a large inventory is one of the best benefits of owning a mat. Other than soap, soda and snacks, there isn't much else needed. If you have WDF and over the counter items, then you may have a small inventory, but probably not enough to mess with software to manage it. Just a clipboard and check off list would probably be more than enough.

I use Excel to track expenses. Others use MS Money or Quick Books to track expenses and write checks. Some owners just use their checkbook register to track expenses.

Thanks for the reply. I have some questions. I purchased a start up software to help me understand some basics of owning a laundromat but, what sort of demographics other than income and density should I consider? I have noticed that some dry cleaners have a computer to use that is why I was wondering about the software when selling the dry cleaning and other services. Also one last thing, are having tannning beds a great ammenity to have and are they profitable? Help me understand some of the basics I need to seriously understand before going further.

A demo analysis can be calculated on a variety of the figures in a demo report, you should take a certain percentage in a 1, 3 and 5 mile radius, of the entire population, renters, and households in a low gross income range, then take a certain percentage of those totals to get an estimate on what you may be able to capture. In addition to demographic analysis you could also assess the competition and figure the annual revenue for all the laundromats that you would be competing with.
