The conservative estimate for Pennsylvania electric rate increase for 2010 is 28%! Obviously I'll have to raise my prices. Anyone else having to deal with this huge increase?

Bottom Line, when our costs go up, we MUST RAISE OUR PRICES.

I think we are in for a utilities expense rising tsunami! I have been designing every aspect of my new store for just this event.
I fully expect utilities to be 50%-65% higher 24 to 36 months from now.
Yet our government has re-tinkered the CPI index to mask any actual inflation.
This is going to redefine the laundry business.

Michael,
In Michigan, a utility just received approval to build a giant coal fired generating plant. Along with the approval came a responsibility to shut down several existing coal fired plants.
Michigan has always had reliable electric power at reasonable rates. In fact, our electric rates have risen far less than other utility rates here. Even if Michigan's electric rates doubled tomorrow, they'd just be catching up with natural gas and water/sewer rate increases over the past 2 decades. On the other hand, water/sewer rates continue their endless climb with almost annual increases.
As they improve technology in the delivery of electricity, it shouldn't spike in price as much. Nat gas will never again hit $13.60 whatever like 2 yrs. ago on the NYMEX. It's abundant now. I see water and sewer being the one sore spot. It's going to be expensive in the future. People will just have to get used to higher costs when it comes to laundering their clothes. Owners will have to raise prices as needed to cover their rising costs.

I think i will lower my prices now to offset inflation and taxes and double my volume after you raise your prices. thanks bodman
bodman, I think deflation of the dollar is the looming storm on the horizon. The Fed is playing a dangerous game with it's weak dollar policy to sell off our debt. The only thing lowering your prices would accomplish is less profit and increased overhead all around. Right now the administration is screwing small business the most with taxes.
Haha, bodman, you must be kidding.

Just received my electric bill for the month of December. My cost per Kilowatt rounds up to be .09 cents per KW with all taxes.
Each month I break down the price of all my utilities (therm for NG, gallons for water & sewer, kw for electric) and then compare what I pd the previous month and year.
It might be good to do all the comparisons for all of them like we do for NG throughout the country.
Heck, we share vend prices (some of us) why not some of our utility costs?

I just got my last gas bill of the year. I replaced my furnace and water heater at the end of March and the water heater in June. Even with the old equip. in service for part of the year I was able to save over 7000.00 year over year.

Tom,
Are you comparing gas used or just your gas bill? I didn't replace anything last year and my gas bills are much, much lower. I saved $5,850 last year in gas just due to the lower gas prices from the previous year.
Take a look at your gas bills and check the difference in the CCF used to see if your new hot water tank helped reduce your bill.
Duane.
Duane, It's not full year and I know prices were much lower last year. CCF is lower. I was just logging my end of year and I always record the difference year over year. It just helps me to track pricing and use. I'll be crunching it down to a fine hair as soon as tax time is over.
A CCF example for comparison sake. Oct. '08 994 CCF/Oct. '09 796 CCF.

Tom,
Just making sure you were comparing apples to apples. Don't forget to throw into your data any differences in sales, outside temp, price increases and other equipment upgrades.
Duane.
Thanks Duane. Yeah I need a little more data and free time to crunch it down to full year. Gas prices alone are the biggest factor. I'm mainly interested in gas use reduction comparison. We all like the lower gas prices this year.

In with my January 28, 2010 electric bill was a notice that rates were increasing 18% effective January 1, 2010.
New cost per KWH $0.097 + ( $4 monthly billing fee and various local taxes)
I am correct in calculating the elctrical cost per load of running my washers?
34 mins (approx cycle) / 60 minutes * ( 12 amps * 120 Volts ) /1000 * .097 = ~ 8 cents
