I will be much less forthcoming with "insider" questions and information here on the board now that it's being advertised so publicly and anyone may join freely. Just as some here wouldn't want their customers reading all of this stuff, and I don't care for my competetors leaving copies of The Journal in their stores for the public, FaceBook gets to be a relatively public forum depending on who your fans are.

Just my opinion.

Case,

I agree. The Journal, Planet Laundry and the CLA are industry-specific entities. Non of the informative articles, threads, ads, etc. should be thrown out to the general public sector. I would never put The Journal out on a table in my laundromat (I don't even let my employees read it) and it certainly should not be available on FaceBook if that is indeed the case.

Back to my idea from a while back that this site could easily implement a "members" and "non-members" section. Not that there needs to be any fee like at that other site, but any random Joe who can type the site name into a web browser will end up here with full enrollment ability...

I actually had a customer marveling at how much my new equipment cost the other day. I gave her some standard schtick about needing a long term investment and never focused on a number. She immediately began spouting industry trends about card systems, and even knew the name of the rep I use at my distributor... Turns out, she's a little bit of an information-aholic, and read (nearly memorized) the last 3 issues of The Journal that were available at one of my semi-competitors across town.

I think the Facebook thing could work okay, but the CLA folks running things there need to be cautious of the security settings, etc. to be sure that friends of my friends don't begin to see things they shouldn't just because I'm a fan of the page... I'd be interested to hear Michelle or Brian's take on what the perceived benefit of a FB membership is for the forum...

Facebook? That decision definitely falls into the "WTF are they thinking?" category.

I am a member of a couple private appliance repair boards that are pay-to-play. It's only $25/year or so and that's all it generally takes to keep the public out.

I'm in agreement that I come here to share with other people that are actually participating in this industry. I'm not a CLA member because I don't see the value in their rather large annual fee, but I would be willing to pony up a few dollars to keep the general public out of this discussion board.

Guys,

What if every CLA membership included pre-registration on this BB? In other words, filling out the CLA membership application included a section for registration on this BB and only CLA members could visit this site. Now, before I get boood away, what if the charge for membership was reduced to $100 per year and $20 for each additional store? I think CLA membership would go way up as would participation in this BB since every member would be ready to start posting immediately.

A $120.00 charge per yr would be great & I'm sure more laundry owners would join, I know of at least four owners that have Not renewed or have never joined because of the price being to high.
No BOO Here.
