Read about the industry via this message board and other sources of information (do a search for valuation discussions if that's your concern). Consider joining the CLA and review all their newbie information.
Your question is way to general for anyone to spend time to answer for you, so I suggest you utilize common sense and understand what you want out of the business before you engage in it.

Interview the owner and ask lots of questions. Go look at the comp. and see what you're up againest. Go the the CLA convention in DC and make some friends and learn TONS!
