Does anyone use surveillance cameras in their store?

Suds,
A large number of mats use cameras. I think it is a must for any mat.
Search this forum and you will find several threads on DVR (Digital Video Recorders) systems.
You can even view your store at home.

Yes, we use security cameras and are presently in the process of upgrading from a vcr to a dvr color system.
There were several places online that were recommended but after doing some homework we decided to
make Sam Walmart & Family a bit more richer by purchasing two 12 dvr camera systems from Sam's Club
(monitor, mouse & keyboard not included). Although we have had good Internet buying experience's, we
decided to go with a local company like Sam's with this particular large expense.

No, don't use them...if I was unattended I think it would be very important though.

Az,
I would think an attended mat would benefit just as much, if not more than an unattended mat.
Cameras can protect the owner from customer claims and dishonest employees.
Cameras also can help prevent armed robbery and other assaults on customers or employees. Prevent as in deter.
Attended or unattended, a good security camera system is essential.

I just installed a Sam's club Camera system yesterday and like it. It is doing a fine job. Open 24/7

Duane,
While I don't have a camera system, I do have an alarm system. If there is an action which requires police or other assistance the attendant can press a button and the authorities are notified. In my opinion that is a better immediate deterent than a camera. The attendants can also deal with any customer complaints directly and I do not have a problem with employee theft because the way I run my counter is basically as an independent contractor (therefore the cash they control is all their own).
I'm not saying cameras are a bad thing, if I was looking to spend money on something I would consider them.
How much was the system at Sam's ? I was thinking about buying some software from DigiCam and install it on my PC, the software is ~$300 with a 4 input board.

I have used both the Sams' club system and digi canm systems. When it comes down to needing a picture of the bad guy, the digi cam color cam type is a hands down better system. The Sams club system needs a 24 hr VCR and just makes you feel good about having something. I have had many situations where I needed to catch a person, the computer board color cams worked the best.
