Merlin,
I forgot to tell you, one of my favorite competitors will be buying dinner for all those who guess the right answer.
I was not going to look at the poll results first until I found out there was a dinner involved. Then I went for the "competitive advantage". Maybe that feature should show up after the Mfg. choice is made. I did know Hoyt started Mfg water heaters in 1910, but so what.
before that was washateria and automat.

If I have to pay out; All meals are only good in the service area which I reside. No transferring of gifts available. No cash substitutes will be honored. All sales final. Not responsible for lost or undelivered mail. Winner pays all tips and taxes!

Tom,
Yes, in the 1940s, they were often called "wash house" and "wash room". The term "laundromat" was well-accepted and quickly came to be used generically to denote any coin or card operated laundry.

Guys,
Okay, the answer, of course, is Westinghouse. 71% of you got it right. Did anyone cheat? I'm sure you didn't.
Back in the 1960s, Westinghouse developed a concept using all front load washers and single pocket dryers. As I recall, there was even a Central Pay Station from which the equipment was started. They called it a "Laundromat" and registered that word as a trademark. Since most laundromats at that time were heavy into top loaders, Westinghouse's concept was indeed unique. Unfortunately, the concept did not survive but the name "Laundromat" certainly did. Was Westinghouse just 50 years ahead of its time?
That was an easy one. Tomorrow's trivia will be much trickier.

I'm betting that the term Laundromat was borrowed from the popular eatery in the 30's and 40's, the "Automat".....
