Here is the history chart of NYC's water rates for you guys to compare.

I imagine some of you pay more, but I bet most of you pay less.
These guys are worse than OPEC, yet there doesn't seem to be any outcry about these obnoxious increases.

It's not only the amounts that they are charging, but the velocity of the increases are outrageous!!! There is no shortage of water or emergency here that would warrant these kinds of increases.
I have resigned myself to the fact that the environmentalists have hijacked the politicians here. Either that or the politicians have simply found another pocket to put their hands in.

Paul,

According to the chart, your combined water/sewer rate has increased by 135% in the past decade. That means that, with respect to buying water & sewer, it will take $58.00 next year to buy the same amount of water that $25.00 bought in 2002. We call that inflation and it's the primary reason that quarter laundromats should switch to DCO.

The primary reason for NYC water rate increase is that, ironically, the city can not cut off the water if building owners don't pay the water bills. We are paying to support the water and sewer system. While tens of thousands of property owners don't pay for the water usage and city failed to collect it, we, who do pay the bills, take the burden of those who don't. The politicians look at the number every year, hmm...we need more money to support the system.

If that is really the case, then why do you pay?

Lol....Good one Howard!
Maybe I should stop paying too. Wow, I could drop my vend prices and blow out my competitors.....:D

If you notice they actually gave us a "break" this year by increasing ONLY 7.5%.

Here's their spin on it.

Because every time when I'm short on cash to pay the bills, I disconnected the washer drain pipes and collected the quarters, dimes and nickels... Then my checking account looked good again the next day!

There are various reasons why they didn't pay. Some of the water bills didn't make sense. The city only sent out notices again and again. The numbers on the bills kept growing but not a penny was collected.

Paul,

That's not a spin ... it's an Express extract! Basically is says "We reduced our rate increase by 35%."

The next time I raise prices, I'll make up signs that say, "Prices have only gone up 10% instead of the 20% price increase that I had originally scheduled."

Yes Larry, Anyone looking to open a Mat in NYC should have their head examined.

This city is run by a bunch of leftists who are basically anti-business.

The electric rate in this city is even more ridiculous. The electric companies chose inefficient routes to avoid paying higher transaction fees, then the transaction costs (to build and maintain the inefficient routes) were passed to city consumers. The way they charged the electricity is also unfriendly to business. They charge by both demands and usages. The higher the demand is, the higher rate on the electric bill will be. The "demand" is the greatest amount of electric power used in any one-half hour during the billing period. Meaning, to save on electric bills, I should try to avoid the situation when all of my washers, dryers, boilers, TVs, fans, A/C, vending machines, and ATM are used.

Yeah, I saw that. The only positive thing I can say is that it's ONLY 7% because I know they wanted to raise it more like 12-14%.

Addressed to fellow operators who know what the actual causes of inflation are AND yes who believe the true reality of inflation is much more than just a theory,

I did my part in our area based on when once a very key local water provider person ... who I got together with quite frequently socially ... actually had the audacity to suggest that the local water rates should be much higher ... based on the amount local people were willing to pay for bottled water. To make a long story short ... he did hear an appropriate spiel from me. I honestly think it did some good without me feeling guilty of increasing water plant debt or even worse being detrimental towards a potential ongoing long term deficit in its yearly operational cost!!! It takes bona fide mutual respect & consideration to get the process optimized! Could this be a microcosm of some larger scale efforts that is part of the national debate?

Hmmm ... similarly ... should politicians be rewarded for gee whizzy increasing the yearly deficit by a lesser % & possibly increased the overall debt by a smaller % than they planned or during a previous year.

Just because the USA is seriously falling behind in world rankings when it comes to Math proficiency ... you would think that simple arithmetic would still be within our range! WAKE UP AMERICA!
