Guys,
As I travel down the road of life, I've noticed:
1. My dog has created more "shovel ready jobs" than President Obama!
2. Asians are willing to work long, 13 hour days in their laundromat to reduce or eliminate labor costs. However, some of those hours can include sleeping in the back room.
3. Assembly line workers tend to be over-paid while farm workers tend to be under-paid.
4. Some people who own their own business work for next to nothing.
5. Some laundromats are just hanging on by the tips of their finger nails. If failure is imminent, why not just lock the doors and end the misery?
What are you guys witnessing in your lives?
Larry,
You had me laughing with this post as I'm a prime example of #2!

We've Got Your Sock Laundromat
More and more small laundry mats are being sold because new big stores are coming into the area. We are seeing a pretty good amount of small stores instead of closing selling there store for whatever they can get.

1) Unions are killing America
2) Our current governments actions are killing America
3) Illegal immigration is killing America
4) The main stream media is killing America
5) The War on Drugs is killing America
6) Green energy will kill America (it's so NOT ready for prime time yet)
7) Movies are mostly fake computer images rather than real life scenes
8) Wall Street performance is driven by blogs & Tweets
9) Laundry related distributors...............................general ly are unethical.
10) Skydiving can take your mind away from all this, 40 seconds at a time. :)

You know what surprised me last week?
Just the opposite.
I got a brochure in the mail from a business brokerage, listing their Mats for sale.
They had 13 mats for sale in various locations around NYC. 10 of them were Mega Mats, 50 washers or more, some up to 90 washers, 5,000sq/ft.
Only 2 were what I considered "regular" Mats of 1500 sq ft., and one was 2,000sq/ft.
This really surprised me. While the Mega Mats over the last ten years have basically decimated the Mom and Pop Mats, there still are a lot of smaller Mats around, so it's not like there aren't any more left.
I'm actually starting to think that many of these big Mats may not be turning a profit, even though they are selling for more than a Million bucks each, and up (one was asking 1.7 mill without the building. They claimed they had a 25 year lease).
Maybe this Mega Mat crap is starting to become played out.

The Mega Mats worked when they were the only one in town. Since the first one opened up in my neighborhood in LIC Queens in 1998 at least 5 more have sprung within a 1/2 mile of each other eating into each others profits. Not to mention the dozen smaller ones that have also been constructed. Now as these Mats age breakdowns increase and they eventually will need very expensive upgrades plus most of these owners are hands off and contract out maintenance which is very expensive
further eats into the limited profits.
I own my buildings and do my own maintenance so that's why we survive!
