This reminds me of the Wankel engine's piston in the old Mazdas.

Anyhow, I didn't think you could drill a square hole, but given the proper motivation and ingenuity, I guess anything's possible.

Paul,
Here's a shock ... a company here in Muskegon has finished testing and is now moving toward production of a heavy fuel rotary engine for use in military drones and unmanned submarines. How's that for cutting-edge technology?

I'm probably about the youngest one here that might remember Spyrograph... (I know they still make the product, but it's NOT the same!)
That "bulging-triangle" cam is the same shape as one of the original Spyrograph pieces.... if we had a pencil in the right hole of the cam, it would draw some nice patterns where the drill shaft is driving the motion in the animation.
Honestly, if I REALLY needed a square-hole with round corners, I would probably put a standard drill bit and a jigsaw or reciprocating saw to work and get the same end product.
Neat idea and explanatory videos though...

Check out this one. A friend I had sent the square holes video to, sent me this one done on a CNC lathe.
WOW, is all I can say.

I know this doesn't have anything to do with drilling a square hole, but I just love these machines.
When I consulted for a living one of my customers had one of these and it was fun watching it print.

Search on youtube for other items made on the Zcorp 650 printer. It is amazing the things that it could produce in color with movable parts.

Amazing, if you can call that "printing", lol.

I like the comment on the printer.
I saw a better 3D printer before, little larger and less acurate but it can duplicate ANYTHING. It's called China
