My husband & I were reviewing our outrageous gas bills and we were wondereing if any other states charge sales tax on their gas bills. We are in the Philadelphia area and pay 7% each month in Sales tax. There is no sales tax on either the water or electric.

YES, I have stores in North and South Carolina and we pay 6% sales tax on gas in both. This outrageous gas extortion is an extra windfall for the state and county governments to get extra money for more wasteful spending for doing absolutely nothing in return! Think about it, they probably love the increase! We should remind them of this extra windfall when the cry about needing to raise taxes.

In Massachusetts you can get a waiver on sales tax for utility use if you fall into one of several categories, one of them is if you have fewer than 5 employees. Massachusetts requires you to fill out a form every year and it is provided by my utility, otherwise Massachusetts charges 5% sales tax. It might be worthwhile to see if PA or other states offer this waiver but just don't make it common knowledge.

In FL where I am it is 7%, on top of about another 18% on local taxes, franchise fees, etc.
I talked with a gas guy once, he said something about laundry/dry cleaners being exempt, have not followed thru. Sounds like a dream. If you get your gas thru a third party you can eliminate some tax, becuse you buy at the well head. If you are deregulated it works

I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses. I will look into all sugguestions. This is outrageous! Our gas company is owned by the city, run by city employees and is full of incompetent partonage. You cannot even get them on the telephone.
