There are 3 components to your gas bill. There is a charge for the gas that you are burning up. There is another charge for delivering (via pipeline) the gas to your building. There are additional charges for the taxes and surcharges.
When you buy the gas from a 3rd party company other than your gas distributor (pipeline) company; the
distributor normally sends you a monthly bill that
still includes all 3 types of charges but the money you're paying for the gas is sent to the new gas supplier and the taxes are sent to whomever and the distributor keeps the money for bringing the gas to your building. For example: My
single, monthly gas bill included all of the following charges:
Billed for distributor:
Customer charge $25
Gas distribution charge $405
U-16257 surcharge $43
U-16757 surcharge $28
Energy Optimization $20
Michigan Sales Tax $31
Billed for gas supplier:
Gas charge $865
Michigan Sales Tax $52
