Unexpected Dollar Coin Benefit..
To Larry and other coin guys,
I've been needing to replenish my Dollar coins every couple of weeks by a growing number lately.
As time goes by, I'm losing more and more Dollar coins to my customers.
Since my Mats are in NYC, at first I assumed that they need them for the bus. (even though they can use Quarters or MetroCards, some people told me they actually prefer the Dollar coins).
Then, they added more and more "Muni-Meters" for parking, so some people prefer Dollar coins for that.
But what I didn't expect is what my attendants told me today:
That people are collecting the Dollar coins and look forward to coming to my Mats to see which "president" they get next.
I am now going through so many Dollar coins that must be replenished, that my stock is updated fresh enough to keep them 95% brilliant shiny gold colored. The dull ones we put into a citric acid solution (lemon juice), and come out almost like new.
The customers like this and it encourages them to take them home, some for their "presidential collections". Besides, the brilliant gold color has a psychological effect. Some people just think they look great (when new of course).
I realized that this actually has the effect of encouraging customers to come back to the Laundromat that has those shiny gold coins that they can add to their collections. This makes my Mats special, not necessarily compared to a card store, but more so compared to a Quarter only competitor.
Is it a pain to replenish them? A little bit. I have to order them from my bank, and it takes a few days to get them, but it's not nearly as bad as lugging quarters. The weight/value ratio is much easier to work with.
