For every other employer out there, questions like this can get you in a world of hurt.
We all discriminate up to a point when hiring, but we call it other names such as, gut feeling, like the person better, seemed more qualified, etc.
Point in case, I had a fellow travel agency owner, who was hiring for a position and told me about whom he chose for the position.
Two applicants, female, both in their late 30's. 1st applicant had 14 years experience, laid off, and had cancer, but it was in remission.
2nd applicant had 8 years experience, laid off, and out of a job longer than applicant #1.
He chose applicant #2. His reason, #1 had more experience, but he was afraid that he'd have to give her more time off in case her cancer came back, etc. It was a business decision, and I wouldn't blame him for choosing #2 over #1.
Many will agree with me, but writing a post about whom to pick etc, is just asking for trouble. In a private business you can hire whomever you want, any time you want, as long as you don't discriminate. Who says you discriminated over your pick?
It's almost like selling your house. You can choose not to sell it to a white/black/asian/woman/man/retired/blonde/etc, etc, even if they give you a written offer for your asking price or even higher. It's a personal decision.
Selling your own house under the circumstances above is not illegal in the US.
It may not be proper, but that is the law.
PS, applicant #2 only lasted for 8 months, before she left and he had to go and do the whole hiring process again!
