How Do I Adjust My Unemployment Tax Limit
Guys,
I'm trying to figure out how to change the maximum limit (per employee) for my state Unemployment tax for this year. The maximum on which the tax is collected changed from $9,000 last year to $9,500 this year. I had no problem changing the tax rate (which changes annually) but I cannot figure out how to change the dollar limit on which the tax is charged. Can anyone give me a clue? My QuickBooks version is 2009 Pro. Thanks.

There might be a way, but I never found it. I always just changed the rate to zero once the max was met

Howard,
My problem is the new, higher maximum means that QuickBooks will stop creating a liability for the tax too SOON. QuickBooks needs to create the liability entry until each employee's gross exceeds $9,500 rather than stopping at the $9,000 limit that we've had here for decades.

Larry & others,
Those types of annoyances is one of the reasons why it can be of value to get acquainted with a relatively simple database program such as msaccess for these types of situations. There are probably even easier to use database programs that hopefully someone else will volunteer to share their experience on the more tailorable database approach. There should be some database programmers lurking somewhere on this BB!
The last few years in our State of North Dakota, the unemployment online file & pay ... does those calculations for us. It is then just a matter of an "easy enough" verification.
Of course there are some people who think that it is not the governments role to facilitate even what is the most basic & relatively easy to do.

I pay the UE and sales tax online here in FL, and also use QB pro.. unless you have subscribed to their payroll service the tax is done manually when creating paychecks. You can put in any amount you want.

Pete,
I do use their Payroll service so it calculates all withholding taxes for me. Looks like I'm gonna have to break down and call QuickBooks. I hate that.

Guys,
Just a quick update: QuickBooks stopped supporting my QuickBooks Pro 2009 program and that's why they failed to update to the new Unemployment Tax dollar limit. Once I installed QuickBooks 2012 and ran an update, the new $9500 limit appeared on my QuickBooks. It seems that 3M will not support any QuickBooks program that is more than 3 years old. My new program cost me $250.00 at Staples. This does not include the Payroll option which I buy direcly from QuickBooks.

I bought a new unopened QB pro 2012 for $127 on ebay. They sent an email saying QBpro2009 would not be able to use billpay after May something, 2012..not a scam at all to make you upgrade.
