The point I wanted to make is that if the washer is put out of service as soon as the bearing begins to rust, it won't have a chance to seize up and ruin the shaft. I don't think Alliance shafts are especially weak but I do know operators who will let their washers howl and howl without even thinking of putting them out of service and rebuilding them. I wish my competitors had this "Let it run until it stops" policy.

Absolutely! You can indeed save the shaft if you put the machine down as soon as you start to hear the "freight train" a com-in down the line....
I can't stand hearing that sound. It's so loud and irritating. And the customers can't stand hearing it either!
There's a mega-store I compete with who's had an 80lb washer howling for weeks now. Incredibly loud!! The attendant told me he won't fix it because he doesn't want to spend the money (typical in our industry, isn't it? That mentality is the beginning of a Mat's downfall).
