tough luck with hiring

Over the last two weeks, I've hired two employees but I've had very tough luck locating the third. Out of about four dozens of applicants, I've asked about five people to come back the next day with their photo ID and ss#. They all said that they were happy with the schedule, payment, and would start working the next day but none of them has shown up to work and none of them called. Very frustrating!

Speculation: they're not here legally. While (in most states) you can't ask directly about immigration status, I got in the habit of asking applicants to fill out the W2 and I9 forms at the end of the interview if I wanted to hire them. Instead of waiting for them to return with D/L, Soc, Tribal Welfare Card, etc. I let them know BEFORE the interview that, if selected, they would have to do the tax withholding and I9 paperwork "right away." I would tell them, "The sooner we get this done, the sooner I can put you to work."

I once attempted to hire 2 brothers to work in my kitchen. One did the paperwork, passed his ID to his brother, then I interviewed and paperworked the brother... I caught the duplicate SSN and d/l info right away, and told them to go get BOTH sets of ID. Never saw them again.

This is yet another reason I absolutely LOVE working with my staffing service... they've pre-screened and pre-paperworked all applicants. Even a background check! The only reason I end up with an occasional no-show on day one is when they can't pass their drug screening.

The better I believe they'll be, the more I'm disappointed. If I don't think they are a borderline axe murderer, I won't hire them.

That's a good one Bruce. I have a cleaning lady (using the term loosely ) who could double as a Russian body building coach. She is scary!

Many said that they didn't have SS#, but then immediately mentioned that they did have Tax IDs or ETINs. Someone must be misleading them into thinking that it was ok to work with a Tax ID only.
