Drain Cover

Can you let me know about your drain?
Just wide Open? or grate or screen(like mesh) on it?
How big the main drain pipe?
Do you clean out reguraly? how often?
You just clean trap by yourself? or hire company to clean main drain line?

On our main drain we have what looks like a roof drain cover/sifter. One person stated that he thought they were called crown gates at Menards. When one of ours broke I tried a dozen different places locally and ended making something to cover it.
I strongly suggest you use something that is quite fine on the bottom and maybe a little more porous on top. This will keep heavy objects like coins or rings from going down the drain but also will not clog up every other day.
I check my two drain troughs that the Dexter’s dump into every Saturday, to clean and pick up the $2-5 bucks in change takes a total of 5 minutes. The drain on the top loader trough never has money but needs to be cleaned once a month or so.
Not having anything is major mistake as I left the one uncovered for a couple of weeks when it broke and a pair of shorts got down in the pipe and caused a lot of problems before I figured out what it was.

Thank you so much, now I need to think and find the appropriate screen cover or will make by myself if not on market, something like "DOME" shape, dense grid 1/3 height section of screen and more wide holes on 2/3 portion upto top....I search but it's hard to find this type of large screen...
How did you make it? using steel mesh? or wood frame with attached some screen??

I bought a length of the next size smaller pvc pipe. I cut it so that it sticks about 6 inches off of the bottom of the trough and put a flat drain cover on the top. on the 6inches between the floor and drain cover I drilled about 100 holes just smaller than a dime. Their was a little to much much play between the new pipe and the main drain so I use a rubber seal around the new pipe at the floor. Works great so far. the holes that I dilled have clogged up before but drain cover never has. So I haven't had a overflow yet. The whole piece pulls out so it is very easy to clean and didn't cost much. I couldn't come up with a good plan to make a device that could be screwed down into the old sifters slots. If you can spot weld it would be easier. Good luck with whatever you do. Cory

No holes on your flat drain cover on the top of your invented nice device?
the size of holes on upper part of your device is bigger than lower part holes?
How did you attach "rubber seal"?

Hi Cory,

How big your drain pipe size?
How many washers for one pipe?

I made screen by wire mesh, square hole, size is a little smaller than penny...
I put this put vertically on the drain cover, the height is around 6 inch, trence height is 12inch.
Lints built up from bottom, but just around 2inch height on the screen, but hard to remove lints from the mesh screen...
I am wondering if I make pipe type like yours, would it be more eash to clean out the screen pipe??

It sounds like panty hose slid over pipe is a good replacement for the screen . all you do is pull off discard and slide another one on. cheap from dollar store.

Thank you for new idea...
The Panty Hose has holes? water can easily run through them?
What is "SLID" for?
Can you explain a little more? where to cover up? pipe? what pipe?
