Paul,
I just repaired my computer and got back online after lightning hit my neighbor's 100' tall pine tree yesterday. Pine splinters everywhere including the roof of my house.
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to All!

That happened to me a couple of years ago. Lightning hit the transformer across the street from me. Most of my block got toasted circuit boards.
I didn't have a surge protector, so I lost the RJ45 connection on my computer.
Did you have a surge protector Larry?

Paul,
I just have one of those power strip surge protectors that all of the components plug into. The lightning came through the ground to my Comcast line and into the Comcast modem. It fried the Comcast modem, the ethernet card inside the computer tower and the Vonage modem.
I never saw a tree explode so badly from a lightning strike before. There were pieces 10' long thrown 50' from the tree. There's a 2' long piece on the roof of my house 100' from the tree. It's amazing the amount of power that nature can concentrate into a small space like a tree.

Yes Larry, the same thing happened to my computer. I had a surge protector for the power, but not for the RJ45 line so my internal ethernet card got fried.
I fixed it by simply putting in a plug in card.
Anyhow, Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
