Need new storage tank
Soon IM going to need a new storage tank. The one I have now is about 370 gallons and over 28 years old. Just the other day I noticed it leaking (again). Last time I was able to weld a patch on it, but this time I cant get to it because the leak is around the back. So it's time for a new one. I know the one I have now is to big Im just trying to figure a good size that would fit my place. I never had a problem running out of hot water I know when I drain my tank it takes about 10 minutes or maybe less to heat up. If everyone started the machine with hot water at the same time I could see there being a problem but I dont think that will ever happen. Even if it did I think my heater will replenish the hot water as fast as it's going out. I have 30 top loaders and 29 front loaders 35 pounds and larger. I've been thinking about a storage tank in mid 200's. Anyone have any problems with a smaller tank with insufficient hot water.

Kenny,
You've got a lot of washers and half of them are top loaders. How much water heating capacity do you have - total combined btu output?

You might want to let your insurance company know that you patched a pressure vessel so they can void your insurance now rather than just leave you with no coverage in the future when you file a claim.

kenny, why don't you take this opportunity to convert to tankless? look into rebates from local gas company... maybe worth it.
how easy is it to remove existing tank and install a new one? maybe a big job because if it happens to mine, i'd have to knock down a part of the wall.

Kenny,
Wow. You've got a lot of water heating capacity there. You wouldn't want too small a tank paired to a couple of very large heaters like those.
You're monthly gas bill must be huge.

I was kidding, but its not a good idea to do stuff like that it can come around to bite you.
BTW- It sounds like you have way too much heater capacity. Back in the olden days you needed much more hot water than today. I replaced a 1,200,000 BTU/Hr beast a number of years ago with a pair of Natco Super-E 199/80 units and 90+ percent of the time only one unit ran and that was for about 810 pounds of washer capacity.

Bruce,
It's still something I might consider.
Larry It's just one unit. It's a Raypak Hi Delta under 10 years old.
Last month I used 2378 therms of gas.

How does one right-size a tank for front loaders? I have 22 front loaders, about 560 lb capacity. I have a NATCO tank that has been slowly leaking for the past 2.5 years. Also what's a good budget range for replacement?

Jeff Deal did a good write-up on this site about how to do it not long ago. He was much more honest about it than most equipment venders, but I still think his numbers were a little high. Why not get a quote from him and Natco and see what they tell you. Based on the number of turns you do and your own knowledge of how much water your machines use and what percentage is hot you should be able to come to a fairly good estimate yourself.
Assuming a mix in size of those 22 front loaders I would say you could definitely get by with no problems with a pair of Natco Super-E 199/80 (199,000 BTU/HR 80 gallon capacity) units, and maybe even get by with just one 199/119 unit.
