Albright,
Yes, as it turned out, the Smart Card System leaves a lot to be desired. However, when it first came out, it was advertised as a much better system then the "old magnetic card systems". This is exactly why no one should be too quick to jump onto the latest and greatest new card system. It takes time to prove a new system is practical ... or not.

Please provide us with a link because it's not that easy to do.

I love this place. After reading all the post and reflecting WHILE DIGESTING MY LUNCH FROM GOLDEN CORRAL i HAD AN EPHIANY, Why not just charge a flat fee at the front door for each bag of laundry ( one bag =one person) and let the customer wash and dry all they want for that fee . Like all you can eat places. Problem solved no need for coins or cards just one cashier . GOODNESS some times i scare myself , bodman

IIRC, the Savannah Soap Company has a self-service laundry subscription service.

The above links by John gave me a "flashback" of when I spent time in Guatemala & saw a fella in a mountainous area with an ox that was totally covered with an unbelievably heavy load & he himself had an unbelievably large & heavy load on his back.
I am not sure if he was one that had the scrap wire looped to his shack so he could have a TV though ... maybe the connection to a "free press" is more compelling than we thought!

Awesome!
I just read the entire post while eating my lunch. I am only 6 months in to ownership and threads like this are invaluable! I own a QO store, but think a lot about different options for my store. Threads like this give such an insight no one could ever come up with on their own!
Thanks!

lol. I was just kidding. I thought about charging flat fee for self-service before. It would be best to charge by pounds (i.e. one price for each bag that is 50lb. or under). Then one employee has to stay at the door all the time because the place has to be big enough to implement this idea. Then I supposed there should be at least two entrances. Here come two employees. Now one customer says,"hmm, I just found this sock yesterday. It had been hiding in the back of the toilet for years. Let me wash this alone. There goes one wash machine. Now, this underwear...I attempted to fart but instead I **** on it. (excuse my language.) Let me wash it alone, too...Soon, a row of washers are occupied by one customer. Then there will be customers who can not find empty machines to use. Here we probably need one more employee to unload the machines and prevent the customers from taking up too many machines and big machines. Of course, now we think about Chad's "limited free dry" promotion. Just how much limitation do we need in this kind of place?
This reminds me of many buffet restaurants that have failed in the past. "Free" usually brings "craziness". Then there was "craziness" against "craziness". At first, the buffet restaurants raised the prices, then added mandatory tip, then mandatory service charge, then limited the hours one spent there, then limited the quantity of the expensive dishes, then removed the expensive dishes, then soon they figured out that their restaurants did not attract those who only wanted to spend $5 each meal, those who wanted a quieter and more private environment, and those who came for the expensive dishes only. They thought to themselves, hey, maybe I should have built a smaller restaurant for the customer volume that I am having. Well, too late, bro...
p.s. Read how much limitation there in savannah soap co.'s membership package. That sounds more realistic. http://thesavannahsoapco.com/memberships
