You are someone who is willing to dig deep to find every little nugget that can further reinforce your commitment to your chosen place in our industry. More importantly, it illuminates that you are someone who cares – cares enough to go that extra mile in service to something bigger than yourself. Good work. No… great work ! This year, dozens of volunteers – Coin Laundry Association Board members, associates and CLA staff members – worked beyond reasonableness, digging into every aspect of this industry’s trade organization, with the intent to make a good thing great. ...

I have landed a commercial account with the local sewer and water department, washing their leather gloves. But I am having trouble getting the gloves soft and pliable. I also could use some tips on how to remove all of the dirt, grime and grease on them. I would appreciate any advice you can provide. First of all, during the washing process, the most favorable product to use is a citrus-based liquid detergent. With that, you can use colder water and achieve higher detergent efficiency. Plus, the citric portion of the detergent will remove most oils and greases. When using this product be sure to use it with warm water. This product is probably most suitable ...

Here Are a Couple of Unique Pricing Models to Consider That May Help You Present and Market Your Wash-Dry-Fold Business I’m always looking for different ways to market and develop a wash-dry-fold service. So, this month, I’d like to discuss a couple of ideas that are rather unique and that can make wash-dry-fold – especially the home delivery aspect of this service – a bit more understandable to customers, with regard to pricing. A frequent question you’ll hear from potential wash-dry-fold customers who have never used such a service before is, “Exactly how much is it going to cost to do my laundry?” A couple of ways to simplify this concept for your wash-dry-fold ...

7 Not-So-Obvious Insights into Customer Psychology Sure to Help You Grow Your Business I’ve come to the conclusion that the greatest threat to a self-service laundry’s growth – and perhaps even its survival – in our modern, high-tech and significantly diversified world is to take a myopic view of your customers. By that, I simply mean not understanding your customers from strictly their point of view. Today’s customers have more power than ever before, thanks to their ability to leverage social media, the ease of conducting online comparison shopping, and the great proliferation of choices available to them. Hence, store owners have to work harder to understand ...

An Interview with Chicago Multi-Store Owner Paul Hansen Paul Hansen is a third-generation laundry owner who owns six vended laundries in Chicago. He also currently serves as the president of the Illinois Coin Laundry Association. This past June, at the Clean Show in Las Vegas, Hansen was named the Coin Laundry Association’s Member of the Year. How did you first get involved with the Coin Laundry Association? When I was just out of college, someone asked me to be on the Board of Directors of the CLA’s Illinois affiliate. I did that for a while. However, over the years, I kind of fell away from it. Then, about five years ago, the Illinois CLA’s president ...

Upgrading Your Laundry Business Takes Planning and the Right Partnerships [This is the second of a three-part series examining the key factors to consider when retooling a self-service laundry.] Any great project starts with the right partner leading the way. That’s where store owners pondering a retool of their laundry should lean on their distributor. “Laundry equipment distributors shouldn’t just sell equipment and walk away,” said Jim Rosenthal, North American sales manager for Speed Queen. “The good ones in this industry are true partners that help store owners maximize their business potential.” Retooling a laundry is definitely a time when store ...

How to Bring Back Laundry Customers Year-Round Last year, retail sales topped $655 billion during the months of November and December, and that number is expected to grow. They don’t own a washer or dryer; they live in transitional housing of some kind. For several families, they’re choosing between buying ...

As reported here earlier, Chicago has begun implementing a large tax on city water. The first tax of 7.5 percent was put in place in March and will continue to climb over the next four years, until it reaches a rate of 30 percent. What’s more, this doesn’t take into account the regular annual increases that will continue to be added to Chicago laundry owners’ water bills. Since the tax was first announced, the Illinois Coin Laundry Association has been working hard to get vended laundries exempted from this tax – and recently a city ordinance was introduced that would allow for a full refund of the tax paid by self-service laundries now and in the future. ...
