Everything changes… always . No trend or tactic will be around forever. Yes, it may adapt, but you can’t count on stagnancy. You must embrace innovation. Successful small-business owners in all industries typically are the first (or second) to purchase the latest technology or try out new marketing methods. As a whole, they love innovation, because it represents a changing and growing society. They see – and rightly so – innovation as an opportunity, not a threat. Perhaps never in the history of the vended laundry industry was this notion more evident than this past June at Clean 2017 in Las Vegas. The show’s sold-out exhibition hall boasted more than 227,000 ...

I just landed a commercial account where I will be required to launder rags used to clean medical equipment. However, I’m unsure as to the specific water temperature needed to completely clean and sanitize these items. I heard somewhere that 140-degree water was required, but I’m not sure about that. There are two factors that come into play when sanitizing such items. The first one is the chemistry you use to wash the items, and the second is the water temperature. However, sometimes you don’t need to be so specific about the water temperature if you’re using the proper chemicals. When we talk about “sanitization,” there are two chemicals that are generally ...

Here Are the Keys to Conducting an Effective Job Interview If you own or manage an attended laundry business, it’s no secret that at some point in time you’re definitely going to have to advertise for and interview prospective attendants. This task just comes with the territory. And, if you’re like many store operators, you simply do as well as you can to interview the available candidates and then to make the best “gut decision” possible with regard to who gets awarded the coveted positions. However, if this is your method for hiring “the face of your business,” you’ve got to admit that it’s certainly not a very scientific approach. Despite giving it the ...

The Latest Products and Technologies from the Laundry Industry’s Top Companies California multi-store owner Brian Brunckhorst unofficially dubbed the 2017 edition of The Clean Show to be “The Year of Technology.” And given the vast array of brand new high-tech offerings that crowded the Las Vegas Convention Center this past June, who would argue with that description? “Almost every major equipment manufacturer was demonstrating software to better manage their equipment,” Brunckhorst explained. “Whether it was software to report data from the machines, control operations or remote vend the machines, we saw it this year. In addition to the equipment manufacturers, ...

Industry Experts Sound Off on the Most Common and Dangerous Pitfalls of a Laundry Lease – And How to Avoid Them [This is the second of a two-part series on obtaining the most favorable lease terms for your laundry business. Part One appeared in the July issue.] Once signed, leases tend to be rather unforgiving documents – as many former self-service laundry owners can attest. More than a few store operators have put pen to signature line on a commercial lease that ended up, in one way or another, being bad (or even fatal) for their business. This month, in the second part of our series on laundry lease negotiation, we’ve rounded up seven of the industry’s ...

In Today’s Marketplace, Your Brand is Critical to the Success of Your Business. Here’s How to Build a Strong One If you’ve spent time reading this column lately, you’ve probably seen the word “brand” in some form at least a dozen times. The reason for that is simple… Brands are important! Building your brand correctly will help you avoid any long-term reputation issues, and it will even help you win some of the short-term battles you’re likely facing. Developing ...
