“Social responsibility.” For some, the term may evoke a roll of the eyes, conjuring up images of a slightly hollow nod in the direction of feel-good displays by businesses eager to be seen in a good light. The practice is sometimes cynically viewed as either a heavy-handed public relations move or the realm of the economically naïve. However, when done well and for the right reasons, the reality of social responsibility is much different. It can work to underscore your business’ brand, increase profits over the long term and simultaneously create real, positive change within your community. I’ve had a couple of opportunities to consider social responsibility ...

Is there a chemical and/or preventive maintenance procedure that will keep our main drain line clean? Occasionally, we experience a backup of water, which seems to be due to a buildup of a black greasy residue within the line. Would you recommend a periodic flush of hot water to “melt away” the detergent? If so, how hot? Our normal hot water temperature is maintained at 120-degrees; however, most washes selected are in cold water. We also have observed that some of our customers use too much powdered detergent, which we believe contributes to our problem. We are a two-year-old, full-service laundry with a four-inch main drain that runs approximately ...

Cut Costs by Limiting the Number of Times Employees Handle Each Wash-Dry-Fold Order Do you mind if we get a little touchy-feely this month? Over the last six months or so, I’ve had numerous conversations with some of my colleagues from all across the country as to what we can do to become more efficient in our wash-dry-fold operations. When it comes to processing wash-dry-fold laundry, one of the keys is keeping employee “touches” to a minimum. The more a garment is handled during the process, the higher the cost to you of laundering and packaging that particular item. Let’s take a look at how many times a wash-dry-fold order is touched – from the moment ...

Here’s a Look at a Day in the Life of a Laundry Owner – And at All of the Many Business and Life Lessons It Can Teach Us There are so many different opportunities to learn. One method is to enroll in formal classes at a school or university. Another way is to attend a lecture or a speech. You also can search the internet for valuable insight on any topic you choose. And, of course, another approach is to simply read technical or informational reference books. However, there is still yet another effective method of learning – to read stories containing lessons within the narrative. We commonly educate young children with this method, using such vehicles as ...

Some of Today’s Top Owners Discuss the Ways They’re Reinvesting in Their Growing Laundry Operations As the story goes, a teenaged Warren Buffett partnered with one of his friends to buy a used pinball machine for $25 – which the high school buddies promptly installed in a local barbershop. Apparently, the game proved popular with the barber’s clientele, so the young entrepreneurs reinvested their profits to buy more pinball machines. In time, they had eight machines in several shops. Eventually, they sold their gaming venture, and Buffett used his portion of the proceeds to buy stock and eventually launch another business. Of course, the rest is well-documented ...
