As you may know, the Coin Laundry Association’s bi-annual conference, Excellence in Laundry, takes place May 16-17, 2018 in Naples, FL at the luxurious Naples Grande Beach Resort. While the fun, education, and camaraderie will appeal to all of the attendees, one important benefit to joining us at this event is the opportunity to speak with the laundry industry’s leading manufacturers. When you attend a trade show such as The Clean Show (which will take place next year in New Orleans, by the way), you’ll find a show floor full of manufacturers. However, with the throngs of people in the convention hall, the noise of the crowd, and the vast expanse of ...

Jim’s wife, Pepper, for whom the laundromat is named, manages the ...

Apartment completions reached a 30-year high in 2017 and beat the 2016 level by 30 percent, according to a report in Multifamily Executive . Last year, 364,713 units were completed in the 150 largest U.S. metros, more than doubling the long-term average and growing the U.S. apartment stock 2.1 percent. The peak in completion volume was driven by 15 metros where construction has been particularly active in urban core areas. Those 15 metros contributed roughly half of the nation’s new units in the past year. Overall, the most units in 2017 were completed in Dallas (25,104), New York (22,666), and Houston (20,759). “Necessity is the mother of taking chances.” – Mark Twain A recent visit to a laundromat in the Lower Price Hill enclave in Cincinnati got me thinking about our business and the nature of necessity. The aforementioned laundry is Washing Well community laundromat, a social venture established by a local organization called Community Matters whose mission is to create a thriving and more just community by removing barriers to opportunity. This handsome corner laundromat was bustling on a Sunday afternoon in January when I stepped through the front door to meet with Patty Lee, Community Matters’ director of development. When I asked her why a community development ...

I had one of my stack dryers burn on the inside. I don’t know what caused it. Help! There are a number of factors that could be responsible for this occurrence – chemicals still in the clothing after the wash cycle, a lighter in one of the pockets, malfunctioning controls on the dryer, an excessive amount of lint around the burner box, etc. With regard to chemicals in the clothes, be aware that hair salons, auto repair shops and medical/health professionals regularly use alcohol- and oil-based products in their businesses – and these chemicals sometimes don’t completely rinse out of the clothes during the wash cycle. As a result, when the garments are heated ...

Retention Marketing Methods Will Help Keep Your Current Customers Returning Again and Again “Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again” – Walt Disney Having authored numerous articles on the technicalities of – and necessity for – attracting new customers and improving market share, I thought it was time to discuss retaining the ones you already have. It’s the second piece of the puzzle. Did you know that it is far less costly to keep a customer you already have, as opposed to attracting a new one? It definitely is. Of course, it’s ideal to do both at the same time. If you’re seeing the same customers in your laundry on a regular basis, ...

How Today’s Labor Market is Impacting the Laundry Business When Houston laundry owner Rob Maes looks at his 2017 W-2 forms, one number jumps out at him – 600. As in a 600-percent employee turnover rate. “In other words,” Maes clarified, “on average, we replaced every single employee once every two months. And, when I talk with other store owners, labor is the topic that comes up the most often. It consumes, by far, the greatest amount of my time.” Maes’ situation is perhaps not all that surprising, given the current state of labor in the U.S. The labor market is near full employment. The jobless rate is low. The economy is adding tens of thousands of jobs ...

A Seven-Step Plan for Successfully Developing the ‘Laundry Service Center’ Concept at Your Store There’s no doubt that the “laundry service center” concept is gaining ground within our industry. And for good reason. A true laundry service center packs multiple services into a facility’s footprint in order to appeal to – and benefit from – a broader demographic. As a result, owners of laundry service centers enjoy favorable financing, a diverse revenue-generating portfolio, more protection from economic downturns, fewer competitors within a given geographic area and, generally, boosted revenue-per-square-foot. Laundry service centers successfully capture ...

The Time Has Come to Start Discovering New Ways to Digitize and Personalize Your Laundry Business For decades, we’ve been looking internally for our future. We’ve made enormous improvements to our businesses, equipment, and the way we function day to day. The accomplishments speak for themselves. But where do we go now? Yes, there will always be innovations that create value for our business, but I’m not convinced that the answers we need are in our circles anymore. We need to look elsewhere. We need to go beyond our walls and start taking pointers from the rest of the world. I’ve been looking for years at what’s happening in and around the industry, and ...
